Topic One: The Tough Question- Third Assignment: Open Project

 Title: Life's Patches
   Christina Bernadotte, 2018 (22 x 24 in.)
Summary:
For the open project assignment, I created a piece called "Life's Patches". This piece symbolizes my path, present, and future goals that I have accomplished or will accomplish. I wanted to represent something not necessarily unfinished, but rather something to be discovered. I feel my life revolves around my personal blanket as we grow more opportunities will be given that will be stitched into my blanket. For instance, if you look closely at the patches one display the painting of  "Frida" by Romero Britto was a gift given to me by the artist after I completed my internship in his studio. That experience was an amazing opportunity because my mentor Paula (also one of the patches with the word BBBS which stands for Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Miami)  pushed me to show my sketchbook to Mr. Britto and he gladly took the time to look at t and offered me an internship on the spot. Furthermore, the NWSA logo represents the school I'm attending. To clarify I'm depicting memorable and meaningful aspects of my life. As the figure illustrated as me is looking out to the horizon because our goals are unlimited and we will always look for higher goals.

Title: Frida
Romero Britto, 2012 (20 x 16 in.)
This is the painting I mentioned above that I used as a reference for one of my patches for the artwork I was given by Romero Britto after completing my internship.

The two references mention above were used also to create my patches.

The Process:
In the process of creating the piece, I began planning my ideas by listing them on a sheet of paper. The paper contains what the piece will depict my life story. I listed meaningful memories that I achieved or will achieve.

This is a list I created to base it off from my piece.

After planning my ideas, I began to plan where I would place my ideas on a large piece 22 x 24 in watercolor paper. I decided to use a mix of media such as watercolor, sharpies, graphite, and color pencils to create my piece. I began by drawing the piece with continuous lines in a 2B pencil from the left side of the paper shifting to the right. Once that is completed, I used the watercolor to blot large areas in the painting and gently painting smaller areas with a very detailed brush. Once I recoated the areas, I highlighted and sharpened some areas with color pencils and sharpies by creating various markings. Also, I stippled some areas to create shadows in the piece.

The pictures above are different areas in the painting that I created certain markings and stippling techniques shown in my piece.

Reflection:
My thoughts about creating the piece was a very hard process. I'm quite surprised with the results. For me I was stress with time but, accomplished a completed piece that would be taken me at my desired pace months. I learned to loosen some of my details and lines arrangements. I'm glad about the outcome effect but, feel it could use some retouching or brightening. Overall I'm glad I achieve this piece at a faster rate.
