Summary:

For the landscape ambitious in-depth assignment, I created a piece called "Nature's Competition". This piece symbolizes natural selection and survival of the fittest. I wanted to illustrate the concept of plants and the human form of competition. I choose the sunflowers to depict people passage of competing in their long life. Moreover, sunflowers show the bonds between two people, as represented by the strong and upright stem seeking out positivity and strength, as the bloom turns to face the sun. With this in mind, I wanted to the path human take to get to success. I performed the action with a partner to by first we would begin intertwining the flower around the two outer sticks to show our path of thriving towards our source which is the sun. We both cross path in the middle giving a meaning of fitness of one is lowered by the presence of another. Soon we begin to switch path and use each other strategically ideas to reach to the top. As one makes it to the top, the other begins to unravel to shows his attempt to succeed but failed. For plants, they must adapt to their environment because of the evolutionary change when individuals with certain characteristics have a greater survival or reproductive rate than other individuals in a population.

Process:

In the process of creating the piece, I began planning my idea by discussing my plan with my fellow classmates. On a sheet of paper, I made a blueprint to construct my 3D model. After planning my ideas, I began to list the materials I would need. To create this piece I used a wooden plank for the base, three sticks with two of the three being identical, styrofoam, spray paint, yellow acrylic paint, ribbons, and sunflowers. I began by spray painting the wood and sticks green. After the drying process, I placed the sticks vertically upright with the two identical sticks loosely screwed abling it the sticks to bend towards. Moreover, I painted styrofoam yellow to depicted it as the sun. Lastly, I attached the sunflowers to two separate strands of ribbons of 24 inches each.

Reflection:

My thoughts about creating the piece was beneficial in attempting to shift into something out of my element which was quite challenging. I'm quite surprised by the results. For me, I was very anxious about performing because of my anxiety but I accomplished my fear of performing in front of an audience of my peers and teachers. I felt my classmates responds to my piece was open to different interpretations I haven't considered. I'm glad about the outcome effect but, feel I could extend my piece by using humans as the flowers and attaching them to a ribbon. Overall I'm glad I achieve this piece outside of my comfort zone.
