Topic Two: Pattern and Ornament, Part 2 of 2 (Assignment #4 Quadrant Abstraction)

 Quadrant Abstraction (Stable Leg):
Christina Bernadotte, 2018 (11 x 15 in.)

Progress:
This was my progress in the course of the week.

Textures:
These are the textures derive from my piece.
Chair Drawing #1:
The chair drawing I derived my design into the quadrant abstraction is the frontal position.

Quadrant A:
I was assigned quadrant A which is located at the bottom right of the frontal design of the chair.

Process:
After completing my chair drawing, I incorporated the chair design #1: frontal position into my abstraction piece "Stable Leg". I planned out my concept in which my piece will derive from the chair leg (the concept is explained in the summary). I decided to try to use the medium of Prismacolor art stix, sharpies, graphite, and gouache (gouache seem to have a richer pigment and higher opacity than watercolor). With a 2B graphite pencil, I continuously drew the outline shapes onto an 11 x 15 in. paper. Once that complete I started from the left side moving gradually to the right as I parted each section. I apply the gouache color in particular areas lightly and some I layer to get a richer variety of pigment color. I used the Prismacolor art stix, sharpies, and the 2B graphite pencil to create textures and shadows by stippling. I reference my leg and shoe for this piece. For the mountain texture, I took a plastic bag that I compress into a ball and begin blotting the gouache paint to create a rocky texture which is display in the piece above.

Summary:
Since I was assigned the leg part of the chair I display the design through a concept in which the chair leg is symbolized as a  human stable leg indicating a reliant leg that will steady our pace to unearth successes, self-understanding, and longevity of unyielding faith. The leg stabilizes our direction in life by expanding our new walks of life. The other leg showcase in this piece reveals the loss of balance, especially the setbacks that are keeping us from getting to our destination. The stable leg will always help the distress leg regained the confidence to stand up and take control of life again after we fall. Moreover, the color of the white shown in the leg presents the leg being drained because it needs a sense of guidance and the red sock placed on the leg represent the leg being wounded from the failures in life. The two legs are placed in a position to form a shape of a mountain which correspond to a real mountain in this piece. The mountain signifies an arduous obstacle we need to endure in order to ascend us toward achieving our goals.

Reflection:
I feel this piece successfully came together, especially with timely pacing myself through the week. I'm quite surprised by the outcome of the overall. I never have completed pieces in my past years in a week which shock me to realize the ability I have to be determined to finish my piece. I was quite frightened to blow up my details of patterns and lines arrangements but it compelled me to expand the size. I felt overall I was able to achieve my desired result but, I feel I could retouch some areas stippling the leg in particular.
